Increasingly, the design of networking equipment has proceeded along modular lines. During this presentation, some of the motivations for this trend will be described. Likewise, the history and current status of an industry effort to standardize the interaction between the components of a modular network element architecture will be discussed. Finally, an overview of some of the technical problems currently being faced by this industry effort will be described.
